  • completely clean up the Windows Update local directory
net stop wuauserv
rmdir /s /q %windir%\SoftwareDistribution
mkdir %windir%\SoftwareDistribution
net start wuauserv
  • or using the Explorer, move the SoftwareDistribution folder to a new disk, then create a symbolic link where ’e:’ is your disk drive unit
mklink /j %windir%\SoftwareDistribution e:\SoftwareDistribution


takeown /f %windir%\winsxs\ManifestCache\*
icacls %windir%\winsxs\ManifestCache\* /grant UserName:F
del /q %windir%\winsxs\ManifestCache\*
  • Change UserName with your Windows login name
